My Bucket List

July 11, 2008

One of my favourite activities when I rot at home alone is to have movie marathons on my laptop. Indonesian television is generally filled with melodramatic telenovelas. Most of them insult my intelligence and I’m not a particularly smart cookie either so can you imagine the sheer stupidity of their plot? It’s mindnumbing television at its best, complete with teen stars prancing around with doe-eyed innocence, illogical malice and generally terrible acting.

With the abundance of “liberated” movies available at every Trade Center here, I am in heaven. Last week I had a mini marathon with a rather macabre theme: Death – with The Bucket List, The Diving Bell & The Butterfly and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. A blockbuster, a foreign film and a musical about terminal illness, paralysis and slitting people’s throats, all with a very upbeat tone! Oh I love this city.

I got inspired to make my own Bucket List – a list of things to do before you hit the bucket.

Here’s what I got so far:

  1. Release 99 red helium-filled balloons I wanted to do this with Aaron but he’s leaving in 9 days for Australia
  2. Smile at The Handsome Stranger on my bus Hot stranger with a very adorable derrière was on my bus 4 times now. ‘Tis fate!
  3. Watch all 6 of the Star Wars movie just to see what the big deal is all about. I am still a Star Wars noob and how can I miss the most important icon of pop history.
  4. Live in all 6 continents (Antartica optional) South America would be sooo much fun!
  5. Read a novel entirely in French and understand it hopefully… which is another way of saying re-learn French at a functional level beyond “Ou est la gare?” I am also pretty sure that’s the wrong spelling.
  6. Help the old lady by my bus stop Just another sheer act of randomness to absolve whatever guilt I have for being born middle class and privileged. I’ll figure something out soon.
  7. Run a mile my stamina is horrible, generally, and after these two months I haven’t pumped my heart hard enough.
  8. Fantasize about starting up a waste-management company learn all I can about waste management, logistics and political panhandling that would go into making it work before school starts
  9. Ask a boy on a date because it’s 21st century and there’s no harm in knowing what you want (=
  10. Watch Death Cab For Cutie concert with Nisa and Dawn to pop my concert cherries and kick off another awesome year at Smoo with Narrow Stairs, Plans and Transatlanticism ringing in my ears.

Nothing grand, I know, but at least they’re realistic, feasible, concrete and they are completely utterly mine. World peace be damned, for now. 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 can be done within the next two months anyhow. My list for saving the world will come soon enough once I work out my Master Plan To Save The World From Utter Destruction By The Human Race version 3.0

What would be on your Bucket List?
