Some Tribe Somewhere.
June 1, 2009
Jas brought us to the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden.
None of us knew where it was. My cab circled round three parking lots and somehow wound up in NUS Law. Now I know where the C J Koh Library is. There’s a Black Angus inside there too, quite random isn’t it? I had to get to the Botanic Gardens and that meant trekking through the campus bushes. I am not -that- crazy.
It turns out the secret entrance was next to the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden. I entered the Children’s Garden compounds and was confused since university students do not lounge around sand beds and paddling pools with toddlers. Apparently you have to have a child with you to enter and I GOT IN. Yes that’s right. I’m so badass I can infiltrate a playground. Imagine what else I can sneak into next time.
Jason brought the chips and I made the dips from scratch. There was some salsa verde which needed more tomatoes. The tomato balado sambal needed less salt. The sour cream and onion was alright.
Joe brought Manora and the fudgiest flourless chocolate cake. He baked it himself from a video off Youtube!
Dawn came bearing mangoes and her unicycle. I kid you not: the mangoes were good. She brought her monocycle to meet her monoversity friends. None of us managed to travel a metre unsupervised and neither did she. That girl may not travel on a wheel but will develop some serious arm muscles by the month’s end.
Nise and Wilfred bought various form of cooked chicken. Chang brought himself but left so quickly.
There’s always so much food leftover. We attempted playing frisbee, attempted being the operative word here. Our hand-eye coordination is best reserved for writing essays, drawing animals and conjuring up ways to save the world. But give us 457 more weekends to practice and we’d totally own it.
Sundown and drizzle, we dispersed to various parts of the island. Some of us trudged down to Island Creamery in the heat for very berry and soursop ices. I stayed on, fearing I’d get lost. What’s up with the heat lately, Singaling? An evening walk can get you drenched in under an hour.
It’s in the conversations: the swapping of plans and some sordid tales and our lack of athletic abilities. Maybe we really are on a different ivory tower and I didn’t want to recognize the difference.
I’ve been missing this -not the individuals parts. I miss the whole.
So, good May overall!
